Flagler County Fire Rescue currently has 6 full time rescues/ ambulances and often staffs up to two additional units for special events. FCFR protects and serves a population of approximately 95,696 over 571 square miles. Last year the FCFR ran 12,500 call, and 6,250 year to date. On average Flagler County performs 60-100 endotracheal intubations per year. Thus far, within the current fiscal year, 25 intubations were executed with a 92% success rate. There were 23 first pass successful intubations and 2 unsuccessful where a secondary airway was then used.
Prior to changing to IntuBrite, Flagler County used the standard metal blades and handles. These blades and handles had very poor lighting which made them difficult to use outdoors. Last year Flagler County had 80 intubations prior to the use of IntuBrite. First attempt success rates were at 78% - 6 second attempts that had a 50% success rate. The remaining intubations used a secondary airway device (King Airway). Last year we spent $651.00 on secondary airways. With our new practice of using IntuBrite we have spent $77.00 on secondary devices. Although a minimal cost savings, the use of IntuBrite in the field has demonstrated reduced trauma to the airway due to lessened attempts and increased paramedic efficiency. As Medical Director of Flagler County and ER Director, I have noticed improved patient care and smoother patient transfers of care due to the increased number of secured airways as they arrive tot he emergency room.
Upon speaking with the crews in the field, all state that the ease of use with the IntuBrite Systems has made their jobs easier. The light weight blades and brightness of the light makes it easier to see and identify the anatomy.
In closing, I support the continued use of IntuBrite products and would recommend their use to other agencies.
